VIEW IN DETAIL

An acrylic painting by artist Karlalise Horstmans called THE ESCAPIST featuring an orchid on a table beside burning incense with a buddha meditating and a plant climbing the wall beside an open window. There is a footprint on the table, suggesting an unusual activity and recent absence. The work relates to suicide in the artist's family.

Works before 2022

Karlalise has been a lifelong creative. She has painted consistently since middle/intermediate school, and has exhibited in New Zealand since 2017 (for instance, in member exhibitions at the Kumeu Arts Centre and Depot Artspace). However, she began exhibiting her paintings professionally (full time) in 2022. There are limited records of her work prior to that time.
